Grogan's Walk

A proper woodland walk just outside Chester, Grogan's Walk is one of those local spots that rarely makes the guidebooks but rewards anyone willing to lace up their boots. The reserve itself is modest in scale - you're looking at a few well-trodden paths threading through mixed woodland with the occasional glimpse of open ground. It's the kind of place where you'll spot pheasants crashing through the undergrowth and hear more birds than you'll see.

The walking here suits families with younger kids or anyone after a gentle hour's amble rather than serious hikers. The paths aren't taxing and the whole loop probably takes 45 minutes if you're not stopping constantly to identify every tree. Come in spring and the woodland floor puts on a decent show. Autumn's decent too when the light filters through properly.

It works brilliantly as a morning activity if you're staying at one of the nearby caravan parks - Birch Bank Farm or Northwood are both within a couple of miles, and Netherwood's practically on your doorstep. Pop in before heading into Chester for lunch, or tag it on after visiting Delamere Forest, which sits about five miles south and has considerably more infrastructure if you need cafes and facilities.

Free to access, no gates to fight through. The real value here is that it's quiet - properly quiet - without feeling remote. Not a detour worth making specially if you're passing through, but if you're based nearby for a caravan holiday, it fills an afternoon slot without fuss.
