Hobbucks Nature Reserve

The reserve sits just outside Nottingham, a proper slice of Nottinghamshire countryside that feels worlds away from the city. Hobbucks is essentially a working nature reserve - wetland and woodland habitats that actually mean something for local wildlife rather than just looking nice on an Instagram post.

You'll find yourself walking through reed beds and around open water, with the kind of birdwatching potential that gets serious twitchers genuinely excited. Spring and autumn migrations are the real draw here, though year-round you'll spot water voles, dragonflies, and if you're lucky, visiting raptors. The walking is gentle - mostly flat paths that won't destroy your legs after a camping night.

Honestly, this is more for the patient observer than the fidgety sort. Kids under ten might find it a bit samey if they're expecting drama, but anyone interested in how wetland conservation actually works will find it absorbing. Bring binoculars and a decent camera if you're that way inclined.

It works brilliantly as a morning venture from either Peacock Lake Glamping or Gunthorpe Camping - both within striking distance - giving you something low-key and restorative before heading back for lunch. Allow a couple of hours minimum if you're actually going to look at anything properly. Best visited when the light's decent and the weather's not battering you about.
