Hoarstones Stone Circle

Out on the moorland between Powys and Shropshire, you'll find yourself standing in front of a proper Bronze Age circle - just a handful of stones, weathered grey and moss-covered, arranged in a rough ring on open hillside. The Hoarstones aren't dramatic. They won't make you gasp. But there's something about being out here, away from the carpark and the visitor centre mentality, that makes archaeology feel real rather than museum-bound.

You're looking at maybe four or five stones still standing, which tells you this place has taken a hammering from centuries of weather and indifference. The walk out here is the point, really - moorland views that stretch toward Shrewsbury way, the kind of exposed ground where you understand why ancient peoples chose these spots. Most visitors are either keen walkers doing the circuit or archaeology enthusiasts happy to chase down something that doesn't hand-hold you with interpretation boards.

There's no entrance fee, no opening hours to observe - it's just there. Allow an hour if you're treating it as a destination, less if you're passing through on a longer walk. Summer's the practical choice for weather, though the exposed position means wind is fairly constant regardless of season.

For a camping or glamping holiday in the area, it slots in well with the caravan parks dotted within five miles - Rhyd-Y-Groes, Brow Farm, and Eastridge all within reasonable reach. It's the sort of thing that fills a morning between proper attractions, not something to plan a day around. Worth the detour if you're already rambling in Mid Wales, but don't overestimate what you'll find.
