Fishpool Hill

Standing at 1,266 feet above sea level, this modest hill on the Welsh-English border delivers proper panoramic views without the crowds you'll find on more famous peaks. The climb from any of the surrounding lanes takes about 45 minutes at a steady pace, through a mix of farmland and rough grassland that can get properly boggy after rain.

Walkers who enjoy a challenge without committing to a full day's hike will find this spot just right. The summit itself is unmarked - no trig point or fancy cairn - but the views stretch across the Shropshire plains towards Shrewsbury and back into the Welsh hills. On a clear day, you can pick out the Wrekin to the northeast.

Families with older children who don't mind getting their boots muddy will manage the ascent, though it's definitely not pushchair territory. The lack of defined paths means you'll need decent navigation skills and appropriate kit. Best tackled in dry weather when the ground firms up a bit.

Staying at one of the nearby parks like Mellington Hall or Bow House Country Park puts you within easy striking distance for an early morning climb. Allow two to three hours for the round trip, including time to properly appreciate the views from the top.
