HMS Northey 1

A World War II minesweeper sits marooned in the Langstone Harbour mud near Hayling Island, her hull slowly surrendering to the elements. HMS Northey is what's left of wartime Britain - not a polished museum piece, but an actual working vessel that swept mines from these waters and lived to tell the tale.

You can't board her, which is both the frustration and the point. The appeal is walking the foreshore at low tide and getting close enough to photograph her rust-streaked superstructure, to read what's left of the paint, to stand where thousands of sailors once stood. It's contemplative stuff - a reminder that the war didn't end in 1945 for the machinery involved in it.

Walkers will find this rewarding. Historians absolutely will. Kids might manage twenty minutes before asking when you're leaving. There's no visitor centre, no facilities, no charge. Just tidal access and your own imagination filling in the gaps.

The nearest proper town is Hayling Island itself, a casual sort of place with chip shops and beach walks. If you're based at The Old Dairy Farm Glamping or Fishery Creek Touring Park, both within three miles, this makes a decent half-hour detour on a low tide window. Check the tide tables before you go - that's non-negotiable. The walk across the mud is straightforward, but you'll want wellies and an eye on the water. Go on a clear day and you'll see across to Portsmouth. Go when it's grey and foggy, and you'll feel like you've stumbled onto a war grave.
