Bembridge - Langstone Ferry dock (remains)

All that's left of Langstone Ferry dock is a scatter of ancient timbers and stone foundations jutting from the mud flats near Hayling Island. It's properly atmospheric if you're into that sort of thing - Roman and medieval ships once unloaded cargo here, and you can almost sense the bustle of it all, though nowadays it's just you, the gulls, and about two thousand years of silt.

The remains themselves are modest. You're looking at exposed piles and the odd bit of masonry - nothing that'll have you gasping, to be honest. But that's rather the point. This is archaeology in the raw, not some polished visitor centre experience. It works best if you're walking the coastal path anyway and fancy dropping down to the foreshore to poke about. The mudflats mean you'll need to time your visit with low tide, and sturdy boots are non-negotiable.

History enthusiasts will find it worthwhile. Families with restless toddlers probably won't - there's no interpretation board, no café, no obvious "attraction" to speak of. The surrounding area, though, rewards a longer visit. Hayling Island itself offers beaches and walks, and you're well-positioned to string together a day exploring the Solent coastline. Mill Rythe Coastal Village and Hayling Island Holiday Park are both close enough for a straightforward excursion. Allow an hour, factor in tide times, and come prepared for mud. It's not flashy, but it's real.
