Hitchcopse Pit

The gravel pit just outside Witney isn't what you'd call a conventional tourist stop, but if you're staying at Lincoln Farm Park Partnership or Hardwick Parks and fancy a proper walk, it's worth knowing about. Hitchcopse Pit is an old extraction site that's been left to nature - think water, scrub, and the kind of spot where you might actually spot something interesting without crowds.

It works best for walkers and birdwatchers rather than families after a day out. The appeal is low-key: you've got open water, rough grassland, and genuine quiet. No facilities to speak of, no visitor centre, no café - it's the sort of place you visit because you're already in the area and fancy stretching your legs. Allow an hour if you're doing a proper circuit, half that if you're just passing through.

The nearest towns are Witney itself (very close) and the broader Cotswolds setting gives you context - this is farming and quarrying country, and Hitchcopse Pit is what happens when industry steps back. Winter and early spring are best if you're into birdlife; summer can feel a bit dry and unremarkable. It's free, naturally, and there's no formal access restrictions that we know of, though conditions underfoot can be boggy depending on rainfall. If you're based at one of the local parks for a few days, it fills an afternoon nicely, but don't expect anything polished.
