Appleton Lower Common

The woodland floor at Appleton Lower Common is soft underfoot, carpeted with moss and last season's leaves. This 150-acre forest sits just outside Witney and feels genuinely off the beaten track - the sort of place locals walk their dogs without mentioning it to anyone else.

It's primarily a walker's spot. The trails meander through mature woodland with decent tree cover, and you can lose an hour easily without feeling rushed. The paths are reasonably well-maintained, though they can get boggy after rain. There's no visitor centre or facilities to speak of, which keeps the place quiet. For families with young children, an hour is probably the sweet spot before restlessness sets in. Older kids who like exploring will get more from it.

Historically minded visitors might find the remnants of medieval woodland management interesting - the common has ancient woodland designation - but don't come expecting interpretation boards or formal heritage features. This is more about the walk itself than the story.

If you're staying at Lincoln Farm Park Partnership or Hardwick Parks nearby, Appleton Lower Common makes a proper morning or afternoon break from the caravan. It's free access and there's informal parking at the edge of the common. Go midweek if you want solitude, or early morning to avoid the weekend dog-walker crowds. The woodland's best in spring when bluebells come through, though it's pleasant enough year-round if you don't mind muddy boots.
