Histon & Impington Recreation Ground

Just outside Cambridge, this modest recreation ground doubles as a proper nature reserve - the kind of place locals know about but tourists often miss. Histon & Impington sits on the edge of the Fens, where the landscape flattens out entirely and you can actually see for miles. The reserve protects wet grassland and ditches that support everything from lapwings to water voles, though you'll need patience and binoculars if you're serious about spotting wildlife.

It's a walker's spot, really. There's no entrance fee or visitor centre - just open access to the grassland with paths threading through. You can cover the whole thing in forty minutes if you're moving, or spend a couple of hours if you're actually watching birds. Spring and autumn are the best times, when migrating waders pass through. Summer brings insects and dragonflies, winter can be muddy and bleak.

Families with young children might find it a bit lacking - there's no playground or café, and the appeal depends entirely on whether they'll engage with wildlife spotting. But for anyone camping at Highfield Farm Touring Park or Fen End Farm just down the road, it's a genuinely free way to spend a morning and get some fresh Fenland air without driving into Cambridge proper. Wear waterproof boots though. The ditches here are serious business, and the ground stays boggy for weeks after rain.
