Hinton Downs

The walk up Hinton Downs rewards you with proper views across the Oxfordshire landscape - the kind that make you understand why people bothered building settlements out here in the first place. It's not a dramatic peak by any stretch, but on a clear day you can see for miles, with the Cotswold Hills rolling away to the north and the Thames Valley spreading out below.

The climb itself takes about forty minutes from the nearest access point, which is manageable even for families with reasonably fit kids. The path gets a bit steep towards the top, but nothing that should cause serious complaint. Allow a couple of hours if you want to sit about and take in the view rather than just bag the summit and move on.

Historically minded visitors will find this area thick with evidence of settlement - Bronze Age barrows dot the landscape, and there's genuine appeal in standing on a spot that's commanded views for thousands of years. Walkers tackling longer routes through the Oxfordshire countryside often use it as a waypoint rather than a destination in itself, which is fair enough.

Botswicky Copse is your nearest town for supplies and facilities, though it's worth noting the peak itself is fairly bare - bring water and snacks. If you're based at Nordic Glamping at Botswicky or Evelyns Garden Glamping nearby, this makes an excellent half-day outing before returning for a proper meal. Worth the detour if you're in the area for a week or more; less essential if you're just passing through.
