Hilsea Lines and Ramparts

The Hilsea Lines are Portsmouth's best-kept defensive secret - a sprawling network of Victorian-era ramparts and fortifications that curve across the landscape like a sleeping giant. Built in the 1860s to protect the city from a French invasion that never quite happened, they're genuinely impressive if you're into military history or just fancy a proper walk with some actual substance to it.

You can wander the grassy embankments and peer into the old gun positions, and on a clear day the views across Portsmouth Harbour are worth the effort alone. The whole thing feels refreshingly underdeveloped compared to the sanitised heritage sites you usually encounter - no gift shop, no admission charge, just you and a few centuries of Victorian paranoia. Allow a couple of hours if you're taking photos and exploring properly; it's not a quick tick-box visit.

Historically minded types will get the most from it, though families with children old enough to manage a decent walk will find it engaging enough. The ramparts are easy to navigate and there's room to let kids burn off some energy without losing sight of them. It's the sort of place that rewards a bit of curiosity - poke around and you'll find interesting details most visitors miss.

Based near Hayling Island, it slots well into a coastal holiday if you're staying at any of the local parks. The drive from Mill Rythe or Fishery Creek takes barely ten minutes. Not essential, but if you're in the area it's well worth the detour.
