The Essex countryside around Colchester isn't all flat - Hilly Fields proves that rather convincingly. This is proper walking territory, the kind of place where you'll actually notice your legs working, which makes a change from the pancake-flat bits of the county.

It's a working landscape more than a manicured attraction. You get genuine hills, open fields, and the sort of views that stretch out properly when the weather's decent. The main appeal is straightforward: if you want to walk somewhere with actual elevation and don't fancy driving to the Cotswolds, this delivers. The terrain means it's best suited to reasonably fit walkers rather than a casual stroll with toddlers - there's proper climbing involved.

Staying at Colchester Country Park (barely a mile away) makes Hilly Fields an obvious morning or afternoon excursion. The proximity is hard to beat. Ardleigh Caravan & Camping Park, another 3.5 miles further out, also works well if you're planning a few days exploring the wider area around Colchester.

Timing-wise, spring or autumn suit it best - summer can feel a bit exposed if the fields are parched, and winter mud is genuinely challenging. Allow two to three hours depending on how much ground you want to cover. There's no visitor centre or facilities to speak of, so bring water and decent boots. Not Instagram-famous, but properly rewarding if you're the sort who gets satisfaction from a genuine uphill slog with a view at the top.
