Hill Wood

The beech and oak woodland that makes up Hill Wood sits just outside Devizes, a proper walk through mature forest without the crowds you'd find at bigger nature reserves. You're looking at decent-sized trees, dappled light filtering through the canopy, and paths that meander through the undergrowth - the kind of place where you can actually hear birdsong rather than other visitors.

It's genuinely worth an afternoon if you're camping nearby at Mill Farm Glamping or Country View Camping. Most people will spend an hour to 90 minutes here, wandering the main trails, checking out the woodland floor for fungi in autumn, spotting the occasional deer if you're quiet. Kids won't be bored - there's enough space to let them run ahead, and the uneven ground keeps things interesting, though it's not a "themed" experience. History types might note the wood's age and structure, but this isn't an ancient monument with interpretation boards.

Access appears to be free and unrestricted, though I'd check locally in Devizes before you go - woodland conditions change. Winter is muddy, spring and summer are lovely, autumn brilliant for colour. If you're combining it with other parks in the area, Hill Wood fills that need for a proper forest walk without planning ahead. It's straightforward stuff: decent woodland, close to town, no faffing about. Not spectacular, but solid.
