The walk through Highrigg Belt comes as a proper surprise if you're based around Carlisle - suddenly you're threading through old conifer plantation with the sort of quiet that makes you remember why you came to Cumbria in the first place. It's a forest, straightforward as that, but the paths are decent and it doesn't feel manicured or corporate.

You get woodland walking without the crowds you'd find at some of the Lake District honeypots. The trees are thick enough that even on a grey day it feels atmospheric rather than dreary. Walkers will get a solid hour or two here depending on which route you take, though it's not dramatic scenery - no fell tops or sudden vistas. Families with primary-school kids will find it manageable; toddlers might struggle if the paths are wet.

It's free to access, which helps justify the detour from Carlisle. The nearest proper base is Pasturewood Holidays about five miles off, where the glamping pods with hot tubs would let you recover properly after a morning in the forest. Go when it's dry. The whole thing becomes a muddy slog otherwise, and there's nothing magical enough about Highrigg Belt to make that worthwhile.
