Highpark Wood

Walk into Highpark Wood and you're straight into proper woodland - the kind with actual trees rather than a manicured nature reserve feel. It's east of Hemel Hempstead, accessible enough for a half-day outing but remote enough that you won't trip over crowds on a weekday afternoon.

The wood itself is straightforward: mixed broadleaf and conifer forest with paths that wind through without being overly marked or maintained. You get dappled light, birdsong, and the kind of quiet that makes you realise how little of it you get at home. The floor is soft underfoot - mulch and leaf litter - which is nice for walking but means it gets boggy after rain. Allow two to three hours if you want a proper wander rather than a quick circuit.

Families with kids aged six and up will manage it fine. Younger ones might struggle with the muddy bits and lack of "attractions" - there's no playground or cafe here, just woodland. But if your children actually like trees and the outdoors rather than activities, this hits different.

Walkers come here to think. History types won't find much to hook onto - it's pleasant but not particularly storied. The real appeal is simply being among trees without the pressure to consume anything or tick a box.

Nearby, Norcott Campsite and Merlin Farm Camping both offer base camps for exploring the Chilterns. Highpark Wood makes a solid leg-stretcher between them and Whipsnade Zoo, or a morning's escape before heading elsewhere. Free to enter, no facilities to speak of.
