Grimms Ditch

A Saxon defensive ditch running for miles across the Buckinghamshire countryside - that's Grimms Ditch, and it's one of those archaeological finds that rewards the curious walker far more than the casual visitor. You won't find much fanfare here, no visitor centre or interpretation boards (yet), just the physical reality of what locals and archaeologists reckon was built around the 7th century as a territorial boundary or defensive line.

The ditch itself appears as a pronounced linear feature cutting through fields and woodland near Hemel Hempstead, and following it becomes a kind of treasure hunt - you're walking the same line that Anglo-Saxon people deemed important enough to dig and maintain. History buffs and serious walkers will find it genuinely absorbing. Families with young kids might find it less immediately engaging unless you're the type who enjoys explaining ancient earthworks while trudging through a muddy field.

There's no charge for access and no formal opening hours - it's very much a rambler's find rather than a manicured attraction. You'll need decent boots and ideally a map or phone app showing the route, as the ditch isn't always obvious or accessible. Allow a couple of hours for a proper walk of a decent section.

If you're camping at Highridge Farm or Fuzzy's Farm nearby, it's absolutely worth incorporating into a walking day rather than treating as a standalone trip. Pair it with the wider Chiltern Hills landscape for context - the ditch makes far more sense when you understand the terrain it was protecting.
