Highpark Wood

The woods south of Hassocks are proper Sussex - all beech and oak, with paths that dip and climb through the sort of landscape that makes you understand why people fight to preserve these places. Highpark Wood itself is a mixed woodland where the canopy gets thick enough to feel genuinely remote, even though you're only minutes from the town.

It's a walker's spot, straightforwardly. The terrain isn't brutal - there's a mix of gentler tracks and steeper sections - but it rewards the effort with unexpected clearings and views down towards the Downs. You can lose an hour here easily, or stretch it to two if you're linking it with the broader network of local paths. The woodland floor changes with the seasons: bluebells in spring, deep shade and moss in summer, then that burnished copper carpet come autumn. Winter is when it gets properly atmospheric.

Families with older kids will manage fine; younger ones might flag if you're after a long ramble. History types won't find much to go on about here, but if you're after some honest woodland walking without the crowds of the South Downs proper, it delivers. There's nothing particularly rare or headline-grabbing about it - it's just good, functional woodland.

If you're based at one of the nearby parks - Blackberry Wood is closest at 2.6 miles - this is an easy add-on to a few days in the area. Pair it with a walk down into Hassocks itself and you've got a solid half-day sorted.
