Highclose Wood

The woodland floor at Highclose is thick with bracken and moss, the kind of place where you can actually hear yourself think. It's a proper forest rather than a manicured country estate - Douglas firs tower overhead, and the air smells like resin and damp earth.

This is walking territory first and foremost. There's no visitor centre or cafe, just trails that wind through the trees with occasional glimpses of the Tyne Valley below. Most people spend between one and two hours here, depending on how far they venture. The paths are well-trodden but can get muddy after rain, so decent boots matter.

Historians won't find much to sink their teeth into - it's straightforward woodland with no particular medieval fortress or industrial heritage attached. But that's rather the point. Walkers get the most from Highclose, particularly those based at Valley View Camping & Glamping just down the road at Stocksfield. It's the kind of stop that slots perfectly into a longer ramble through County Durham rather than a destination in itself.

Access appears to be free, though information is sparse online. Go mid-week if you can - weekends bring a fair few dog walkers and families, which isn't bad, just busier than the place deserves. Spring and early summer are best, when the canopy's thick enough to feel properly enclosed but the ground's dry enough to walk without squelching.
