High Woods Country Park

High Woods is a proper Essex woodland - 180 acres of it, just east of Colchester, and it's the kind of place where you can actually breathe without bumping into crowds. Managed by the Colchester Borough Council, it's a genuine nature reserve rather than a manicured country park, which means you get real woodland walks, open heath, and the occasional surprise of spotting adders or rare butterflies if you're lucky. The main appeal is straightforward: miles of walking trails through beech and oak, a couple of open clearings where the light floods through, and genuinely decent views across the Essex countryside when you reach the higher bits. It's free to access and works perfectly for a morning or afternoon sortie while based at one of the nearby caravan parks - Rushbanks Farm or Ardleigh are both close enough that you could walk there if you fancied it. Families with kids will find it less manicured than, say, Colchester Country Park itself, which means older children who actually want to get muddy will enjoy it more. Walkers should allow at least two hours to do the place justice. The best time is spring or early autumn when the forest floor isn't waterlogged and the light's properly golden. Winter's fine too if you don't mind the squelch. It's not a destination that'll occupy your whole day, but as part of a wider Colchester area holiday, it's absolutely worth the detour.
