High Wood

High Wood sits just outside Battle in Sussex, a proper woodland walk that doesn't require a map or a National Trust membership. It's straightforward - dense trees, good paths, the kind of place you can lose an hour without trying. The forest floor is thick with leaf litter, and in autumn it's genuinely lovely underfoot.

What you get depends entirely on what you're after. Walkers will find decent trails running through the woods, nothing demanding but rewarding enough if you're after fresh air and a bit of thinking time. Families with younger kids might find it a touch dull after 45 minutes unless they're into bug-hunting or building dens - there's not a café or visitor centre here, so come prepared. History buffs won't find plaques or interpretive boards, but the woodland itself is old enough to feel substantial.

It's free to access and works well as a break between other attractions in the area. Crowhurst Park and Beech Estate Campsite are close by if you're based locally, making this an easy half-morning slot when the weather's decent. Go when it's dry - wet woodland becomes a muddy slog fast. Spring and early autumn beat summer because you'll actually be cool under the canopy.

The real strength here is simplicity. No crowds, no entry fees, just trees and air. Worth the detour from Battle if you need a walk, but don't expect anything beyond that.
