High Wood

The woodland around Newark isn't dramatic stuff - no craggy peaks or windswept ridges - but High Wood offers something quieter. It's a proper forest walk, the kind where you actually feel removed from the main road noise within minutes. Mixed trees, decent paths, and enough space to let dogs run without feeling like you're in a theme park.

This is straightforward forestry. You come for the walk, not for a café or a visitor centre or any of that. Two hours maximum if you're thorough, less if you're just after a leg-stretch. Families with younger kids will manage it fine - the ground's generally firm enough - though there's nothing to keep them entertained beyond "look, a tree". Dog walkers will love it. Birdwatchers occasionally spot something worth the detour.

The nearest holiday parks - Milestone, Bracken Xcapes, Orchard Park Touring - are all within a few miles, which makes this a solid option if you're based in one of the caravans or glamping sites around Newark. Sherwood Castle Holiday Forest, further out, is worth knowing about if you're planning a longer stay; the Sherwood connection gives the whole area some weight.

Free to walk in, as far as I can tell. Parking might be informal - check before you arrive. It's not somewhere to make a special pilgrimage for, but if you're staying locally and want an hour in the trees without fuss, it does the job.
