High Wood

High Wood is a proper Kent woodland that actually rewards a wander, sitting just outside Maidstone with a network of paths through decent-sized trees and the kind of quiet you don't often find near a town. The forest floor is thick with bracken and leaf litter, which either feels lovely underfoot or annoyingly damp depending on the weather - winter visits tend to be boggy. You won't find anything dramatically scenic, but that's rather the point. This is walking territory, not Instagram territory.

Families with primary-age kids will get a solid hour or two out of it exploring the various tracks and spotting whatever wildlife decides to show itself. Older children might find it a bit samey unless they're genuinely into woodland botany or quiet. It's the sort of place where adults come for a proper walk without destination fatigue - no viewpoint to reach, no queue at a car park, just forest.

There's no visitor centre or facilities that I'm aware of, so bring what you need and don't expect anywhere to buy a coffee. Parking appears to be roadside or informal - worth checking before you go. Sunrise or early morning visits are your best bet for wildlife spotting and avoiding the handful of other walkers.

If you're based at Chegworth Mill Glamping or Bearsted just down the road, it's an easy add-on to your holiday schedule rather than a main event. Oak View further out works too if you're doing a broader Maidstone-area trip. Go for the walk itself, not the destination.
