High Wood Hanger

The beech woods at High Wood Hanger rise sharply from the Hampshire countryside near Alton, offering proper woodland walking without the crowds you'd find on more famous trails. It's a steep climb through mature trees - the kind of place where the light filters through in that particular way that makes you forget you're only twenty minutes from town.

The hanger itself is the draw. Local walkers head here for the gradient and the sense of being somewhere wild, even though it's managed woodland. You're looking at an hour's walk to get a real feel for it, though you can do shorter loops depending on your fitness. Brings out the best in anybody who actually enjoys hillwork rather than ambling on the flat.

Timing matters. Early autumn is excellent - the beeches turn before everything else gets messy. Spring's decent too, though it can be damp underfoot. Summer's fine if you go early, before the heat sits in.

If you're staying at one of the local farms - Feather Down Manor Farm is just over three miles away, or Adhurst Yurts if you want something more elaborate - High Wood Hanger makes a proper day's outing without needing to drive far. It works best for actual walkers and families with kids aged eight or older who can manage the slopes. Anyone expecting easy riverside strolls should look elsewhere. The woodland isn't dramatic in an obvious way, but it's honest ground, and that's rather the point.
