High Weald National Landscape

The High Weald is less a single destination and more a sprawling landscape you move through - a genuine sense of arrival only comes when you spot the rolling hills from a high point and realise how much of Kent and Sussex spreads beneath you. This is proper countryside: ancient woodlands, scattered farmsteads, narrow lanes that seem to have been carved by centuries of foot traffic rather than planning committees. The region covers 560 square miles, which means you won't "do" it in an afternoon.

What makes it worth the effort is how little it's been buggered about with. Walk from Cranbrook into the surrounding High Weald and you'll pass through working farms, past oast houses that still have that distinctive cone-shaped silhouette, and along footpaths that genuinely feel quiet. The geological story is interesting too - the landscape sits on softer sandstone that's eroded into valleys and ridges, creating natural drama without anything feeling manufactured or touristy.

History types will find plenty: the region's timber-framed buildings and iron-working heritage tell a story of medieval prosperity. Families might struggle with the idea of no focal point, no visitor centre, no café - it's very much on-your-own-terms territory. But if you're camping at Glassenbury or Hopgarden nearby and fancy proper walks rather than a packaged experience, this is solid ground.

Access is free and year-round. Allow a full day for a decent explore, longer if you're serious about the footpath network. Best visited when you've actually got time to wander rather than tick boxes.
