High Tor Recreation Ground

The crags rise sharply above Matlock, limestone cliffs that dominate the skyline and pull you uphill whether you meant to go that far or not. High Tor Recreation Ground is essentially that - a proper walk through woodland with serious views over the Derwent Valley once you've earned them. It's free, it's open whenever you fancy, and it takes a solid hour if you're not rushing.

The ground itself is unremarkable until you reach the high bits. Then you get that satisfying moment where the trees thin out and the whole valley spreads below you. On a clear day you can see for miles. The walks are steep in places - not technical, but your legs notice it - so it's more for keen walkers than casual strollers. Kids will manage fine if they're the type who actually enjoy climbing things.

Based near Matlock, you're well-positioned for the wider Peak District circuit. Packhorse Farm and Lickpenny Matlock are both within a couple of miles if you're after caravan pitches, while Darwin Forest and Hoe Grange Holidays push slightly further out but offer more space. It works as a morning or afternoon outing between other activities rather than an all-day destination.

Go early if the weather looks decent - afternoon mist rolls in and spoils the views. The limestone terrain means it drains quickly after rain, so don't let a damp morning put you off. This isn't Instagram-famous, which is precisely why it's worth going.
