About High Pate Crag
This is walker territory, full stop. Families with younger kids might find it a bit much, though teenagers who don't mind a grunt will love the summit reward. The real appeal is doing it as part of a wider day on the fells - you could loop it with other peaks in the area and be out for three or four hours without getting bored. You won't find crowds here like you do at Catbells or Scafell Pike. That's the whole point.
It's free to walk, obviously. No visitor centre, no facilities at the top. Bring water. The best time is late spring through early autumn when the ground isn't boggy and you won't be battling through mist. Winter is doable but requires proper boots and some caution on the descent.
If you're based at one of the parks near Windermere - Lake District Woodland Pods or Park Cliffe are both decent - this makes a natural half-day out. You're close enough to town for coffee beforehand and a pint after. It's the sort of walk that feels like proper achievement without eating up your entire holiday.
