Grandsire

Hiking boots will get a proper workout on this lesser-known fell that rises sharply from the quieter western shores of Lake Windermere. Grandsire delivers sweeping views across England's largest natural lake without the crowds you'll find on the more famous Lakeland peaks. The ascent from the lakeside villages takes about 90 minutes of steady climbing through mixed woodland and open fellside.

Walkers who enjoy a challenge will appreciate the relatively steep gradient and the sense of having earned their summit views. Families with teenagers might manage it, but little ones will find it too demanding. The reward at the top is worth the effort - on clear days you can see right down Windermere's full length and across to the central fells.

Being close to Windermere means you can easily combine this with a lake cruise or visit to nearby attractions. The fell is accessible year-round though winter conditions require proper gear and experience. Allow three hours for the round trip from any of the lakeside starting points.
