High Light Haw

The walk up High Light Haw from Ulverston isn't long, but it's steep enough to make you work for it. Once you're at the top though, you get views across Morecambe Bay that justify the huffing and puffing - on a clear day you can see right across to the Lake District fells, which is properly spectacular. The peak itself is bare and windswept, nothing fancy, but that's rather the point. You're up there with walkers and the odd fell runner, not crowds queuing for photos.

It's the kind of walk that suits families with older kids and anyone who wants decent views without spending half the day on it. Forty minutes up, twenty minutes down if you keep a decent pace. There's a roughish path most of the way, though it can be boggy after rain. Start early if you're going - the weather turns fast up there, and you'll want good light to appreciate what you're looking at.

Stay at one of the caravan parks nearby - Hill of Oaks is only five miles away and well-rated - and you've got a proper base for exploring the area. It's close enough to Windermere if you fancy a lakeside day out, but this walk feels genuine and local, not done up for tourists. Free to walk, obviously. Allow a couple of hours all in.
