High Legh Miniature Railway

A narrow-gauge railway winds through the Cheshire countryside near Knutsford, run entirely by volunteers who take their work seriously. The trains are small enough that adults have to duck slightly getting aboard, which sets the tone for what's essentially a working model railway at full size. You're looking at about twenty minutes of track looping through farmland and past sheds where the real obsessives tinker with engines.

It's the sort of place where enthusiasts come to lose entire afternoons. Families with children under eight get the most from it - the novelty of riding behind a steam engine never wears thin at that age. Older kids might find it a bit slow unless they're already into railways. The volunteers are friendly enough, though there's a certain gruffness about the place that comes from people doing something they love rather than something designed for visitors.

Timing matters. Weekends are when trains run reliably, and you should allow an hour including the ride itself and a poke around the small buildings. It's free to wander round and watch if you want, though a ride costs a few quid. The light diesel smell and the rattle of couplings have genuine charm.
