About High Crag
This is walker territory, pure and simple. Families with young kids will struggle unless they're fell-experienced already. The approach from Penrith side isn't trivial - you're looking at a good three to four hours round trip depending on your fitness and which route you take. Bring proper boots, waterproofs, and a map. No cafe at the top, obviously.
What you actually get is solitude and genuine mountain air. High Crag sits away from the honeypot peaks, so you won't be battling crowds. The rocky summit itself is modest - just cairns and exposed stone - but the vantage point across the Dales and towards the Pennines makes the graft worthwhile.
If you're based at Sykeside Camping Park or Crossgate Luxury Glamping, both within four miles of Penrith, High Crag makes an excellent half-day objective. It's the kind of walk that reminds you why people actually live in the Lakes rather than just visit. Not Instagram-friendly, but genuinely satisfying.
