High Coppice Wood

High Coppice Wood sits just outside Penrith and feels like proper fell country - mixed woodland with the kind of walking trails that let you escape the main Lake District crowds without breaking a sweat. The trees here are a mix of conifers and broadleaf, and you get decent views through to the surrounding fells once you're in among them. It's the sort of place where you can spend anywhere from forty minutes to two hours depending on how many of the paths you fancy exploring.

Walkers will get the most from this one. It's not dramatic enough for thrill-seekers and kids might find it a bit samey after an hour unless they're proper nature types. The ground can get boggy in wet weather, so proper boots are worth considering. Access appears to be free and there's usually somewhere to leave a car nearby, though facilities are minimal - take what you need with you.

If you're staying at Crossgate Luxury Glamping or Sykeside Camping Park just down the road, High Coppice Wood makes an easy morning or late afternoon walk that won't eat into your holiday time. It's particularly good if you want to stretch your legs between longer expeditions to Helvellyn or round the Ullswater shore. The woodland's peaceful enough that even on busy weekends you won't feel hemmed in by other people. Not a destination in itself, but a solid addition to a Penrith-based park holiday.
