The moment you walk through those iron gates near Chipping Campden, you realise this isn't just another country garden. Hidcote Manor is the sort of place where every corner reveals something deliberate - geometric hedges framing views, colours arranged with real thought rather than accident, rooms of greenery that feel like outdoor architecture. It's the work of Lawrence Johnston, an American who basically invented the garden room concept back in the 1900s, and the influence has rippled everywhere since.

You'll spend a good two to three hours properly exploring. Wandering from the formal compartments to the wilder bits, spotting the rare plants Johnston collected, sitting by the old cherry trees. It's genuinely absorbing for anyone who actually cares about gardens - those folk will lose themselves completely. Families with small children might find it a bit slow unless the kids are already keen on plants and hunting for specific features.

Walkers and horticulture types will find far more here than casual visitors. The planting is clever throughout the year, though spring and summer are when it really sings. Being National Trust-run, there's usually a small fee, and the gardens sit well within reach of a caravan stay at Monks' Barn Farm, just five or so miles away near Chipping Campden itself.

It's not a quick tick-off. It demands time and a genuine interest in how gardens actually work. If you've got that, it's well worth the detour.
