The clubhouse sits on a rise overlooking the course, all proper Yorkshire stone and understated elegance. Hickleton Golf Club has been here since 1910, and you can feel the weight of that history walking across the fairways. It's a members' club first and foremost, though visitors are generally welcome if you ring ahead - don't just turn up expecting a round.

The course itself is a decent 18-hole layout that plays to around 6,300 yards. Nothing flashy, but it's well-maintained and the terrain keeps you honest without being unnecessarily brutal. The greens roll fairly true, and there's enough trees and subtle elevation changes to require proper course management. You're looking at a full round taking the best part of four hours, which is about right for a course of this standard.

It's the sort of place where you'll encounter serious golfers rather than stag dos. The clubhouse does decent food and a proper bar, so it's worth allowing time to sit down after your round. Rotherham is just a few miles away if you need anything else, though honestly once you're here you won't be desperate to leave.
