Hewenden Reservoir

The water stretches out grey-blue between the moorland hills, and you realize straight away why locals bother walking here. Hewenden Reservoir sits on the edge of Bingley, tucked into the Pennine slopes where the air feels properly clean. This isn't a manicured visitor attraction - it's the real deal, a working water supply that doubles as a cracking walk for anyone within striking distance of West Yorkshire.

The circuit around the water takes a couple of hours at an easy pace, and the views shift as you go - woodland on one side, open moorland on the other. It's ideal for families who can manage a bit of gradient without moaning. Dogs get a proper run here too. The surrounding paths are manageable year-round, though winter does make it muddy and the bleakness appeals more to walkers than loungers.

There's no café or facilities at the water itself - bring a flask if you're settling in. Access is free and it's light on crowds even at weekends, which beats Ladybower hands down. If you're based at Upwood Holiday Park just down the road, this becomes your morning walk without the faff of driving anywhere. Even from Woodsworth Exploring a few miles further on, it's worth the short trip.

This works best for walkers and photographers rather than people expecting a day out. Young children might find the walk itself more engaging than the destination. Go early on a clear day and the Pennine light does something rather special to the water.
