Hervines Park

The woodland paths at Hervines Park wind through mature beech and oak, the sort of place where you actually hear birdsong rather than the distant roar of the M25. It's a proper nature reserve just outside Amersham, and the whole thing feels genuinely wild despite being within spitting distance of the Chilterns' busier spots.

You're walking through mixed woodland here, with the undergrowth changing seasonally - bluebells in spring, decent fungi action come autumn. The paths are well-maintained but not manicured, which is refreshing. There's genuine habitat management happening, and you can see why local naturalists rate it.

Walkers and wildlife types will get the most from Hervines. It's not a destination for people wanting interpretation boards or facilities - bring binoculars and a field guide if you're that way inclined. Kids will tolerate it for maybe an hour depending on their tolerance for "just trees," but there's no playground nonsense to distract them.

The proximity to Amersham makes it an easy slot into a broader Chilterns walking holiday. You're close enough to the cluster of camping spots around here - Highclere and Penn Meadow Farm are both within easy driving distance if you're based at one of the local parks. Allow a couple of hours to properly explore without rushing.

Free access, as far as these things go, and genuinely worth a morning if you're in the area and want something low-key. Don't expect drama. Expect quiet and decent ecology.
