Herontoll Wood

Deep into the Kentish countryside near Ashford sits Herontoll Wood, a proper working forest that feels a world away from the farmland surrounding it. Ancient oaks and established beech create a canopy dense enough that you'll want to pull on a jumper even on warm days. The woodland floor is springy underfoot - all moss and leaf litter - and it's the kind of place where you half expect to spot a deer or hear a woodpecker at work overhead.

This is walking territory, plain and simple. There are rough tracks threading through, though nothing formally waymarked that I could find, so come prepared with a decent map or GPS rather than expecting signs. Allow a couple of hours to properly wander without rushing. The real appeal here is solitude. You won't fight crowds like you might at a more famous woodland attraction - come midweek and you could have the whole place to yourself.

Families with older kids will manage fine, though toddlers might struggle with the uneven terrain and lack of facilities. Serious walkers and naturalists will get the most from it - plenty to spot if you move quietly and keep your eyes up. The woodland changes dramatically through the seasons, so spring bluebells and autumn colour are worth timing your visit around.

It pairs well with a stay at Go Glamp just five miles away, giving you a proper forest immersion without losing easy access to nearby Ashford. Free to access, as far as I can establish, with no obvious car park or visitor infrastructure - which rather sums up its appeal. Rough, quiet, and genuinely rewarding.
