You'll find this tucked away in the Forest of Dean, just above Ross-on-Wye - a genuine curiosity that most visitors miss entirely. The Hermits Hut is an 18th-century garden feature, basically a folly built into the sandstone cliffs. It's small, honestly. A humble stone shelter carved into the rock face, the sort of thing a Georgian landowner would have commissioned to add a bit of romance to their estate.

What you're looking at is a proper piece of garden archaeology - no crowds, no car parks, no gift shop. Just the hut itself, weathered and genuine, with that particular quiet that comes from being genuinely remote. Walkers will get the most from this one. It's not a destination in itself, but it sits nicely on longer trails through the Forest of Dean, especially if you're already exploring the Symonds Yat area or walking the Wye Valley.

Bring decent boots - the approach isn't obvious and can be muddy. Allow twenty minutes to find it, fifteen minutes to nose around. It's free, obviously, because there's nothing to charge admission to. No café, no facilities, no interpretive panels explaining what you're looking at.

If you're camping at Doward Park or Bracelands, this works as a half-hour detour on a longer forest walk. Don't make it your main event - it won't keep you occupied long. But if you like the idea of discovering something untouched and atmospheric, something that doesn't feel staged for tourists, it's worth the scramble.
