Hen Gerrig

Getting to Hen Gerrig means a proper trudge up from Welshpool, but the payoff is genuine. This isn't a honeypot spot - you'll have the ridge mostly to yourself, which matters when you're standing at 539 metres looking across Mid Wales like you own it.

The walk itself is the attraction. From the car park near Welshpool, you're climbing moorland with grass underfoot and views expanding as you gain height. The summit's bare and windswept, with a trig point marking the top. On a clear day you get sweeping vistas across the Powys valleys - nothing dramatic or jagged, just rolling countryside stretching back on itself like a green quilt.

This is walker territory, full stop. It's not a stroll for the family dog, though teenagers will manage it fine. Allow two to three hours for the round trip, depending on how long you linger at the top. There's no infrastructure - no café, no visitor centre, just you and the landscape. Come early on weekends if crowds bother you, though you're unlikely to see many anyway.

It slots nicely into a Powys walking holiday. Pandy Camping sits just 4 miles away, making it ideal if you're based there for a few days exploring the local peaks. The ground can be boggy after rain, so decent boots are essential, not optional. Winter visits are doable but grim. Spring through autumn is when you'll get the best light and firmest paths.
