Hemsted Forest

The woodland around Hemsted Forest, just outside Cranbrook, is one of those places you stumble into rather than plan for. Ancient trees, proper old-growth stuff, and enough quiet to actually hear yourself think. It's a walking territory rather than a ticketed attraction - no gates, no entry fees, no nonsense. You're free to explore the paths that wind through here, and they're gentle enough for families but interesting enough that you won't feel like you're wasting an afternoon.

Historians and naturalists will appreciate that this isn't some manicured country estate. It's proper working forest, which means you get the full experience - muddy patches, fallen logs, the lot. A couple of hours is usually enough to do a decent loop, though you can easily stretch it if you're the contemplative type. Bring decent boots in winter; the ground gets boggy.
