Hemsted Forest Car Park

The car park at Hemsted Forest is your starting point for proper woodland walking near Cranbrook - nothing fancy, just a practical place to leave the car and get straight into the trees. Once you're out of the tarmac, the forest unfolds with decent trails that wind through mixed woodland, plenty of birdsong, and if you're lucky, spotting deer or the occasional woodpecker. It's the kind of place where an afternoon disappears without you noticing, especially if you've got kids who like scrambling over logs and discovering streams.

Walkers and nature types will genuinely get something from this. Bring binoculars if you're into birds, or just come for the fresh air and the quiet. There's no visitor centre or café here - it's unapologetically low-key. Allow two to three hours for a solid walk, though you could easily do an hour's loop if you're time-pressed. Expect to encounter other walkers at weekends, but weekday mornings are blissfully empty.

Wood View Farm Glamping, five and a half miles off, offers the upmarket version if you want proper facilities between forest days. Both parks punch well above their weight for five-star ratings. The forest itself asks nothing from you - no admission charge, no opening hours to fret over - just turn up, park, and walk.
