Walking into Hemsted Forest near Cranbrook feels like you've stepped properly off the beaten track - the kind of place where you can actually hear yourself think. This is ancient woodland, the sort where the trees have been here longer than most of us will be alive, and the paths wind through dense green with barely another soul around. Allow two to three hours minimum if you want to properly wander rather than rush through. It's free to access and open year-round, though autumn is genuinely worth timing your visit for. The light, the colours, the smell of decomposing leaves - it's the real thing.
