Helm Gallery

The Helm Gallery sits just outside Brighton, and it's one of those places that rewards a slightly curious detour. We're talking contemporary art in a setting that doesn't announce itself loudly - no queue round the block, no gift shop overkill. The gallery focuses on work by established and emerging artists, with exhibitions that rotate regularly enough to give you a proper reason to return.

Inside, you'll find paintings, sculpture, and mixed media spread across intimate spaces. It's the sort of place where you can actually look at things without jostling past school parties. Most visitors spend between 45 minutes and two hours here, depending on how much time you want to spend with individual pieces. The staff tend to be knowledgeable without being pushy, which is always welcome.

If you're camped at Pegs and Pitches or Chalky Downs - both five-minute drives away - this works brilliantly as a morning visit before heading back to the site for lunch. It's also close enough to Brighton's seafront that you could easily combine it with a beach walk and fish and chips afterwards. The real draw here is that it feels genuine rather than tourist-focused. History enthusiasts and art lovers will get more from it than families with restless kids, though there's nothing to stop younger visitors if they're interested in contemporary work.
