Hedon Methodist Church

The Methodist Church in Hedon sits quietly on the high street, a brick-built Victorian structure that tells you plenty about what this small East Yorkshire town once was. It's not the sort of place that'll stop you in your tracks, but it's worth a proper look if you're passing through between Hull and the coast.

The building itself dates from the 19th century and reflects the religious confidence of the industrial era - solid, no-nonsense Methodist architecture with decent proportions inside. The interior's fairly modest by comparison with some grander chapels, all wood and whitewash, the sort of space where you can almost hear the hymn singing echoing off the walls. It's the kind of thing that appeals if you're into the social history side of things - what communities actually valued and built for themselves, rather than the showier parish churches you find everywhere.

Hedon itself is worth a wander. It's a proper market town, albeit a quieter one these days, with some decent Georgian buildings dotting the main drag. The church works well as part of a broader afternoon ramble rather than as a standalone visit. Allow yourself an hour to explore the town centre.

If you're staying at Burton Constable Holiday Park just down the road, this makes an easy drive in for an hour of pottering. The estate and arboretum there is the real draw though. The church is more of a "you're here anyway" spot than a reason to make the journey, but worth stepping inside if the door's open.
