Hedon Howe

A Bronze Age mound rising from the Yorkshire flatlands south of York, Hedon Howe is one of those sites that rewards curiosity more than casual passing trade. What you're looking at is a burial mound - proper ancient stuff, probably 3,500 years old - and the views across to the Wolds make the trek worthwhile even if archaeology isn't your thing.

The site itself is modest. There's no visitor centre, no interpretation boards spelling everything out. You get the mound, the landscape, and your own imagination. History types will appreciate standing where Bronze Age communities left their dead; walkers will enjoy the open countryside and the chance to piece together Yorkshire's distant past. Kids might find it interesting for twenty minutes before asking if there's ice cream nearby.

It's free, accessible most of the time - though the approach can be muddy after rain, so come prepared. Allow an hour if you're making a proper visit, less if you just want the photos. The real value comes if you're basing yourself at nearby Bugthorpe Grange Glamping and fancy a morning walk that's genuinely different from the standard park circuit.

York itself is close enough for a day trip, so you could pair this with the Roman and medieval bits of the city. Hedon Howe won't blow your mind, but it's the sort of place that sticks with you - that sense of standing on something that matters, even if most people drive past without noticing it exists.
