Hedgeley Nature Reserve

The walk into Hedgeley Nature Reserve catches you off guard - you're expecting something manicured, but instead you get proper wild woodland and open moorland that feels genuinely remote despite being less than a mile from Alnwick. The reserve sprawls across rough ground where heather and grass take over from the trees, and on a clear day the views back towards the Cheviot Hills are genuinely worth the trek.

It's the kind of place that rewards a slow morning rather than a rushed afternoon visit. Bird watchers will spend hours here - golden plovers, red grouse, and if you're lucky, hen harriers quartering the moor. The paths are rough underfoot and can be boggy after rain, so proper boots matter. You're looking at anything from an hour's gentle potter to a half-day expedition depending on how far you want to push into it.

Families with older kids who don't mind mud will get on fine, but it's not the place for toddlers or anyone after a coffee shop at the end. The nearest facilities are back in Alnwick itself. River Breamish Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite sits just down the road, making this an ideal morning walk if you're based there.

Admission appears to be free, though information online is thin. Go in spring or early autumn when the light's best and the midges aren't at their worst. Don't expect crowds - that's rather the point.
