Heaver Piece Wood

Walking into Heaver Piece Wood feels like stepping back in time. This ancient forest sits just outside Newent and offers the kind of proper woodland experience that's become rare in the Midlands - towering oaks, tangled undergrowth, and genuine peace. The paths wind through dense trees where light filters through in cathedral-like shafts, and if you're lucky you'll spot deer or hear woodpeckers working away in the canopy.

It's ideal for walkers after something more substantial than a stroll round a country park. Allow a good couple of hours to really explore without rushing, though shorter routes are absolutely possible if you've got kids in tow. The terrain can get muddy and uneven underfoot, so decent boots make sense, especially after rain.

Family groups will find it rewarding provided everyone's happy trudging through mud and scrambling over fallen logs. Those after pure woodland atmosphere rather than manicured paths or facilities will love it here. Newent itself is a functional market town, but the wood is the proper draw.

If you're staying at Haywood Farm or Darnells' Farm - both excellent bases within five miles - this makes a brilliant half-day venture that breaks up caravan life nicely. It's the sort of place that reminds you why people move to the countryside. No crowds, no gift shop, just wood and air and the occasional satisfying crunch of leaves underfoot.
