Heaton Park Reservoir

The reservoir sits dark and still under the Lancashire sky, ringed by moorland that feels properly remote despite being barely five miles from Bury town centre. It's a working water supply - no swimming, no messing about - which means the place has an almost meditative quiet that most lakes lose to paddleboards and inflatables.

You come here to walk. The circuit takes the best part of two hours, and it's straightforward enough that you won't need a map, though the wind can be bracing across the water. Bring binoculars if you're into birds - cormorants and herons are regulars, and there's enough going on ornithologically to keep twitchers entertained for an afternoon. Families with older kids do well here; younger ones might find the walking tedious without a proper destination at the end.

The real draw is the light. Late afternoon, when the moor turns gold and the water catches the sun low and sideways, is when this place earns its keep. It's bleak enough to feel like proper countryside, yet close enough to Bury that you could be back in town for tea.

If you're camping at Burrs Country Park Caravan and Motorhome Club just down the road, this makes an excellent half-day excursion to stretch the legs. It won't take your breath away, but on a good day it's exactly what a reservoir walk ought to be - honest, quiet, and free of fuss. Go for solitude rather than spectacle.
