Heaton Park Boating Lake

The lake at Heaton Park is one of those places you stumble upon and think, 'Why isn't this busier?' It's a proper water feature - about 17 acres of it - sitting right on the edge of Bury with proper walking trails that loop around the whole thing. You get waterfowl, fishing spots if you're into that, and genuinely decent views across the water, especially on a clear day when you can see the Pennines in the distance.

It works best for families with younger kids or anyone after a straightforward countryside walk that doesn't require scrambling up hills. Expect to spend 45 minutes to an hour here depending on how many times you stop to watch the ducks. The paths are flat and well-maintained, which means buggies aren't a problem and grandparents won't struggle.

Free to access, no gimmicks. Come early morning if you want any peace - by mid-afternoon in summer the car park fills up with locals who've had the same idea you have. Winter's actually quite nice here; fewer people, better light for photography if you're that way inclined.

If you're staying at Burrs Country Park Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite just down the road, this makes an easy afternoon visit to break up the day. It's not a full-day attraction, but it slots perfectly into a park-based holiday when you fancy some fresh air without going too far.
