Heath Common

Heath Common sprawls across West Yorkshire like a proper breath of fresh air just outside Wakefield. It's a nature reserve where you can actually walk without bumping into theme parks or gift shops - just heathland, woodland paths, and the kind of quiet that makes you remember why you came to the countryside in the first place.

The reserve itself is straightforward. Paths wind through heather and scrub, dropping down into wooded valleys where you'll spot birds and the occasional deer if you're lucky. It's not dramatic landscape - no killer views or dramatic cliffs - but there's something honest about it. Walkers get the most from this one. You're looking at a couple of hours if you do a proper loop, and the terrain is manageable without being dull.

Families with older kids will find it decent enough for a wander, though young children might struggle with the attention span required. The heath has real ecological value - it's the kind of place where conservation actually matters, which adds a bit of substance to your visit.

Based near Wakefield, it works brilliantly as a morning or afternoon break if you're staying at Broadlands Farm Touring Caravan Site or Nostell Priory Holiday Park. Both are close enough that you won't waste time driving. Bring decent boots if there's been rain - the paths can get boggy. Spring and early autumn are best when the heather flowers and the midges aren't quite so ambitious.
