Headon Wood

Dense canopy blocks out most daylight even on bright summer days - that's your first clue that Headon Wood is proper ancient woodland. This patch of forest near Retford feels wonderfully untamed, with gnarled oaks and towering beech trees creating natural cathedrals overhead.

Walking here is more about atmosphere than spectacular views. The paths wind through thick undergrowth where you'll spot everything from wild garlic carpets in spring to fungi displays come autumn. Kids love the fairy-tale feel, though toddlers might struggle with the uneven terrain and root-crossed trails.

Birdwatchers do well here - the dense cover attracts woodpeckers, nuthatches and various warblers depending on season. Early morning visits reward you with the most wildlife activity, plus you'll have the place largely to yourself.

It's not a destination that'll fill a whole day, but perfectly complements a stay at nearby parks like Wild Acre Village or Hallcroft Fishery. Allow an hour or two for a proper wander, longer if you're the type who stops to examine every interesting bark pattern or unusual beetle.

The wood feels genuinely wild compared to more manicured forest walks elsewhere in Nottinghamshire. Just the thing if you want to feel properly disconnected from car parks and visitor centres for a while.
